Preserving History to Support Healing

MSA transformed a 1907 carriage house on The Dragonfly Foundation’s South Avondale campus into the Farmer Family Dragonfly Center, a 3,100-square-foot daytime retreat for families supporting a loved one through pediatric cancer treatment.

The rehabilitation project balances preservation and function, creating a safe, welcoming environment that supports rest, creativity, and connection. The center includes a library, kitchen, arts and crafts space, recreational and technology areas, and an accessible restroom. Careful attention was given to infection control and material selection to accommodate individuals with hypersensitive immune systems while maintaining a warm, residential feel.

Preservation Led by Integrated Expertise

Preserving the historic character of the carriage house was central to the project. MSA Design’s in-house historic specialists worked alongside the design team from the outset, identifying contributing materials and guiding preservation strategies while integrating modern systems and program needs. This collaborative, interdisciplinary approach improved coordination, reduced risk, and streamlined delivery for the client.

The result is a mission-driven space that honors its historic roots while supporting The Dragonfly Foundation’s work—providing meaningful care and comfort to families when they need it most.
