Our Graphic Design team touched every element of what the school required for this renovation including: exterior signage, driving directional wayfinding, ADA code required signage, donor recognition and dedications, experiential graphics, student work displays, and informational and interactive components.
Establishing Goals
Mariemont City Schools hired our team to design and execute the addition and renovation of Mariemont High School. The project consisted of a new 90,000 square-foot addition featuring new state-of-the-art learning environments, collaboration spaces, common areas, front offices, and student and faculty support spaces. The renovated areas included updated board offices, expanded arts and athletic spaces, performance venues, and athletic competition venues.
The main goals of the school district and community in the renovation of Mariemont High School were to improve user flow and educational value within the site. The adjacent Village of Mariemont is a National Historic Register community, and the final design aesthetic inspiration derives from the traditional building forms and materials to compliment portions of the building that are contemporary. The branded environments pulled inspiration from these varied eras of design, creating a well synthesized and cohesive package.
Creating a Community of Learners
When developing the design principles that would guide the project, the primary goal identified was creating a community of learners. The school houses different “neighborhoods” and spaces designed for specific purposes. These include a “cultural center” or auditorium, a “gallery” to display student work, the “hub” serving as a large gathering space, and a “park” used as a study area.
These series of forums located throughout the building serve as the central gathering places situated around all other learning spaces, with key department graphics serving as identifiers. These identifiers use bold iconography with a pop of color to enhance the surrounding areas. These spaces encourage collaboration between students, staff, and community members alike.
Mariemont High School offers several programs that provide opportunities for students to engage with community partners. The new additions support these partnerships and allow for continued program growth and ways for students to share their experiences while showcasing current work.
A Home for the Performing Arts
Mariemont High School has a strong Performing Arts presence, and to support this community a remarkable sense of place was necessary for student success.
The Little Miami River runs a total of 111 miles through southwestern Ohio and a mainstay of the Mariemont School District. The river stretches throughout all of the School District’s locations and represents a literal and figurative connection for all their schools and the communities served. It was only fitting to have a graphic displayed that reflects the Little Miami in this space.
A Branded Environment for Athletics
Custom designed graphics were implemented throughout the space to create a home for the Mariemont Warriors. The use of Mariemont High School’s brand colors are used as accents throughout the spaces. Exterior banners can be seen at the entrance for the school’s gymnasium and athletics corridor which not only brands the building, but also easily identifies where individuals are on campus.
